World population may hit 15 billion: UN

The world's population will rise to at least 10 billion by 2100 from current seven billion. According to the United Nations a slightly higher than expected birth rates could rise population to 15 billion.

The UNPopulation Fund (UNFPA) in their report warned that population growth will cause challenges for reducing poverty and conservation of the environment. The reoprt is important as it came just before ceremonies to mark the seven billionth human alive will be conducted on October 31. According to their new estimates population will reach 9.3 billion by 2050. This is a sharp increase compared to old estimates. According to their old estimates population will only reach 10 billion by the end of this century.

The report also added that a slight variation in fertility could take population to 10.6 billion by 2050 and more than 15 billion in 2100.
